Lumber quantity calculator FAQ

These answers cover the most common questions about estimating boards, waste, and lumber cost.

How much extra lumber should I buy?

A 10% waste factor is a strong default for many projects. Increase that to 12% to 20% for deck framing, rough hardwood, grain matching, defects, or projects with lots of short parts.

Can I use this lumber calculator for deck boards and framing?

Yes. Choose dimensional stock such as 2x4, 2x6, or 2x8, enter your part lengths and quantities, and the tool will estimate how many full boards to buy at your selected stock length.

What is the difference between linear feet and board feet?

Linear feet measures total length only, while board feet measures lumber volume using thickness, width, and length. This calculator shows both so you can plan stock counts and compare hardwood pricing.

How do I estimate lumber cost accurately?

Enter the price per board for each stock line you expect to buy. The calculator multiplies your grouped board count by that unit price after adding waste so the estimate is closer to the real cart total.

Should I enter actual or nominal lumber dimensions?

Use the actual dimensions that match the stock you are buying. The preset sizes in this tool already use common actual dimensions like 1x6 = 0.75 x 5.5 inches and 2x4 = 1.5 x 3.5 inches.
