Common questions about pricing lumber for a cutting board build.
How much wood do I need for a cutting board?
Multiply length x width x thickness in inches and divide by 144 to get raw board feet. Then multiply by a waste factor: about 1.25x for an edge grain board (25% waste from jointing and planing) or about 1.6x for an end grain board (60% waste from extra crosscuts, planing flat, and trim). For example, an 18 x 12 x 1.5 inch edge grain board needs about 2.25 raw board feet and roughly 2.8 board feet of purchased lumber.
What's the difference between edge grain and end grain cutting boards in cost?
End grain boards typically cost 50% to 80% more in lumber alone for the same finished size. Edge grain uses long strips glued together and loses about 25% to milling. End grain rotates small blocks so the end fibers face up, which requires far more cuts, more glue-ups, and more planing - so the typical waste factor jumps to about 60%. Add the extra glue-up labor and end grain projects cost noticeably more total.
Why is end grain more expensive?
End grain construction starts the same way as edge grain (glue up a panel of strips), then crosscuts that panel into thin slices, rotates each slice 90 degrees so end grain faces up, and glues those slices together into a second panel. Every crosscut, every regluing, and every flattening pass removes material. Combined with how knife-friendly the surface is, end grain commands premium pricing because the lumber yield from each board foot purchased is much lower.
What wood species are best (and most cost-effective) for cutting boards?
Hard maple is the gold-standard cutting board wood: dense, closed-pore, food-safe, and the most affordable premium option at about $9 per board foot. Walnut and cherry add color and run roughly $11 to $14 per board foot. Exotics like padauk and purpleheart are striking accents but cost $16 to $18 per board foot. White oak and mahogany are workable, less common choices. Avoid open-pored woods like red oak and softwoods like pine - they trap bacteria and dent easily.
Are these lumber prices accurate?
The defaults reflect typical retail hardwood prices in the US for 4/4 to 8/4 stock from specialty lumber yards as of 2025. Your local yard or online supplier may quote 20% higher or lower depending on grade, region, and quantity. Use this calculator as a planning estimate, then confirm with a quote before you buy. The waste factors are also rules of thumb - efficient milling can lower them, while figured or short stock will raise them.
