How to measure cabinet doors

1

Measure the cabinet opening

Measure the clear opening width and height in inches. Check the top, middle, and bottom, then use the smallest measurement if the opening is out of square.

2

Choose overlay or inset

Use overlay when the door sits on top of the face frame or box. Use inset when the door sits inside the opening with an even reveal around the edges.

3

Set overlay, reveal, and center gap

For overlay doors, enter the overlay added on each outside edge. For inset doors, enter the reveal removed from each outside edge. Double doors also need a center gap.

4

Cut or order each door

Use the per-door width and height, not just the total pair size. Confirm hinge boring, edge profile, and sanding allowance before final cutting.

Cabinet door sizing questions

How do I calculate cabinet door size?

For overlay cabinet doors, add the overlay to both sides of the opening width and height. For inset cabinet doors, subtract the reveal from both sides. For double doors, subtract the center gap from the finished width and divide by two.

What is a standard cabinet door overlay?

Common face-frame overlays are 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, 1 inch, or 1-1/4 inches depending on the hinge. Frameless cabinets often use full-overlay hinges and should follow the hinge maker's overlay chart.

How much gap should double cabinet doors have?

A 1/8 inch center gap is a common starting point for double cabinet doors. Use a slightly larger gap if doors are tall, the cabinet is not square, or seasonal movement is likely.

How much reveal should inset cabinet doors have?

A 1/8 inch reveal on all sides is common for inset doors. Very precise shops may use smaller reveals, but 1/8 inch gives more tolerance for wood movement and slightly out-of-square openings.

Should I measure each cabinet opening separately?

Yes. Measure every opening separately because cabinet boxes, face frames, and old built-ins often vary by 1/16 inch or more. Label each opening and door before cutting or ordering.
